12 Simple Ways To Cultivate More Peace

 Do you feel like you are rushing through life hoping that your source of peace and happiness will come at the next milestone, completed goal or checked box on your list? 

Do you struggle to find peace in the present moment you're in?

I feel you! For years I walked around the world stressed and overstimulated, just trying to get from one thing to the next. I was living chronically in fight or flight mode and rarely allowed myself to feel at peace in the present moment. It wasn't until my body started to break down that I realized I needed to make some changes. I knew that I didn't want to live that way anymore, so I started on a journey to connect to the source of peace within me.

You don't have to wait until you're in a state of dis-ease to start connecting to the peace that exists inside of you. Below is a list of 12 simple, sustainable changes that you can start implementing today to cultivate more inner peace.

Sometimes the simplest things create the most impactful change. You don't need to implement these all at once. Just pick the ones that feel best to you and give it a go!

12 Simple Ways To Cultivate More Peace

 

1. Carve out small "me" moments

Do you have dedicated moments that are just for you throughout the day? Start to notice where you can carve out some time just to be with yourself. This can be as simple as taking a few moments before heading into work to breathe into your heart, starting a morning or evening journaling practice, or starting a morning ritual (more on that below!).

2. Make everything a ritual

Make an effort to turn your entire life into one beautiful set of rituals. See how you can treat each task on your to-do list today as sacred. Ask yourself how you can shift your mindset from "I have to do this" to "I get to do this". If it's a call with clients, treat each one as it's own sacred conversation. If it's packing the kid's lunches, see how much love you can pour into it.

Be fully present and see if you can enjoy each task more than you ever have before.

3. Slow things down

Intentionally slowing down your life is such a simple way to create more peace. The more you slow it down, the more present you will be, and the more at peace you will feel.

Witness yourself throughout the day:

Are you running and rushing around?

Is your breathing fast and shallow?

Is your mind racing?

See if you can intentionally slow down each task, slow down your breathing, and find space between your thoughts.

4. Sit in stillness

Peace exists inside of the present moment. Meditation allows the mind to completely slow down and your energy to rise. This will bring your awareness back to the present and shift you up the emotional scale from stress & worry, to joy & peace.

Try meditating for 15 minutes first thing in the morning to set the energy for your day.

5. Stay in your lane

It's amazing how many things we worry about that aren't actually ours to worry about! One way to bring more peace into your life is to (and I say this lovingly) stay in your lane. This has been a big game changer for me.

Something I have started asking myself when I catch myself worrying about something: 

"Is this my business, their business (someone elses), or God's/the universe/higher guidance business?" 

If it is not clearly mine, I choose to let it go.

6.  Consume less

Because there is so much information available to us right at our fingertips now,  it can be easy to get overwhelmed and overstimulated. See where you can consume less information throughout the day.

This could look like less time on social media, not listening to the morning news on the way to work, not doing the automatic round robin of checking your apps when you pick up your phone (does anyone else do this?). Start to make space in your day where you are not consuming or taking in any information.

7. Create more

When we create, we get into a flow state. As we do this, our mind becomes quiet, we become fully present, and we connect with the source of peace within us. Swap out that consumption time from above for creation time! Not sure what to create?

Try singing, playing music, writing, journaling, building, painting, drawing. There are endless possibilities of what you can create-- P.S. you don't have to be "good" at it! 

8. Be in nature

Being in nature reminds us that we are part of something bigger. It gives us a broader perspective and allows us to connect to the stillness that is within us. Spend more time being in nature, looking at nature, and observing nature.

*You can also bring nature indoors by adding house plants or fresh flowers to your home to cultivate a peaceful living space*

9. Cleanse your energy

Take time to consciously cleanse your energy regularly. As we move through the day, we unconsciously pick up each other's energy. Have you ever been in a great mood walking into work and after a few interactions you feel your energy dropping?

This could be a sign that you're taking on other people's energy. You can cleanse your energy by simply taking a few deep breaths to center yourself, or doing a quick body scan to assess how you're feeling and releasing what isn't yours to carry.

10. Make time for rest

Make time and space for your mind and body to rest. I don't mean sitting on the couch while watching a serial killer documentary, scrolling on your phone, and painting your nails all at the same time. While this may seem like rest, your sympathetic nervous system may still be activated in this situation. 

Find time for authentic rest that is free of distractions. Allow your mind and body to come into a state of ease.

11. Look at the sky

Take a few moments each day to look upwards and outwards at the sky. As you do this, allow yourself to feel connected to something greater than you. Doing this daily will help you feel at peace with where you are, and guided as you move forward.

12. Say no unless it's a clear yes

Start saying no to anything that doesn't light you up or feel like a clear "yes". Slowly but surely, you will have weeded out the "should dos" and wake up feeling more at peace. Your life will become a string of events that you love filled with things you can't wait to experience and do.
